COACHING UPDATE: September 2000

The August 2000 NIKE BASKETBALL CLINIC has concluded with rave reviews from participants and administrators alike. Former Hong Kong National Team Coach TIM DARLING had the privilege of being paired with ROBERT McCULLUM the new Head Coach of the Western Michigan University Broncos (NCAA Division I), as the featured clinicians. McCullum, has had a varied and distinguished coaching career, most recently as the Lead Assistant to Lon Kruger at the University of Illinois. Kruger and McCullum have worked together for 10 years at three different NCAA Division I programs. Coach McCullum travelled to Hong Kong with his wife Cheryl.

Darling was impressed by McCullum's knowledge, enthusiasm, and his ability to adapt his coaching style to meet the needs of his campers. "Coach McCullum is destined for a successful career as a Head Coach. He has a tremendous amount of experience, and an obvious passion for the game. He has the trust and experience of working with (NBA Head Coach) Lon Kruger. Coach McCullum knows exactly what he wants to accomplish with his program" said Darling. "It will be an exciting and revitalizing year for Bronco's basketball." For more information on Coach McCullum and his Western Michigan University program, please check here.

Coach Darling lauded the administrative abilities of LESLEY FUNG, noting the clinic ran "like clockwork". The efforts of Hong Kong Basketball Association's RAYMOND LEUNG were also "extremely helpful", noted Darling.

Darling also had the opportunity to catch up with two former National Team guards as WU KWOK FUNG and CHUNG MING TAT worked with Darling during his coaching sessions. Darling also had the chance to catch up with National Team Captain YUNG KAM WAH during his stay.

AUGUST 1, 2000

During this month's Nike Basketball Camp, prospective hoopsters will be treated to the return of 1998 Hong Kong National Team Head Coach TIM DARLING.

Darling will be a featured clinician at the Nike Basketball Clinic 2000 which runs August 9th to 14th, at the gorgeous University of Hong Kong athletic facility. Nike Clinic Co-ordinator LESLEY FUNG has once again orchestrated a week of basketball fun and fundamentals that the local campers will always remember.

Darling will be flying in from Ottawa, Canada where he is currently the Associate Coach of the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees. His affiliation with the program has already garnered the school three new recruits. Darling has settled down in Canada to be with his children, and continue to develop and establish his burgeoning business, Basketball Consulting International (currently under construction).

Darling is very pleased to be returning to Hong Kong, where he will be honing the skills of the under 16 year old boys for two days, and working with the 16-19 year old women for three days. This return to the international scene will help ease the frustration of the debacle that occurred in England with the Leicester Riders of the British Basketball League. Darling left that job in November of 1999, in a shrewd move that smacks of brilliant foresight, given the club's appalling mismanagement since. The club is currently homeless and under legal litigation from a former player. To check into the Rider's current woes, and a history of the 1999-2000 season, please check here.

"This is another great opportunity I have been blessed with", said an ecstatic Darling. "This return to Hong Kong is perfectly timed and I am looking forward to working with Lesley (Fung), my campers, and a chance to catch up with my National Team players and members of the Hong Kong Basketball Association."

All well wishers are invited to meet up with Coach Darling during the Nike Clinic sessions.
